Whisperkin Raider

It repeats your words back to you. Not quite right. The inflection is off, the context is wrong, and the smile that accompanies it does not reach the eyes the way a real smile should. But it is trying. Whatever is left of the Lineage that used to inhabit this body is trying, desperately, to participate in a conversation it can no longer understand.
Whisperkin Raiders are the uncanny infiltrators of the Infected Raider subspecies. Bad Brain disease did not strip them of the desire to belong to Lineage society the way it did with Omni Raiders (who became pure predators) or Thrill Kill Raiders (who became hidden sadists). Instead, it left the longing intact while destroying the capacity to fulfill it. A Whisperkin wants to be part of the community. It moves through settlements, observes social interactions, and attempts to blend in using fragmented echoes of overheard speech. The mimicry is imperfect, unsettling, and ultimately hollow: the verbal equivalent of a predator replicating prey sounds to lure victims closer.
Whether the Whisperkin understands the words it repeats is unclear. Fragments may sound almost contextually appropriate at times, creating moments of deeply unsettling near-normalcy. A Whisperkin might echo "good morning" at dawn, or "be careful out there" as someone leaves the gate. The phrases are correct. The comprehension behind them is absent. Close observation reveals the pattern: the speech is always echoed, never generated. Extended conversation exposes the deception as responses fail to track, loop back to previously heard phrases, or simply stop making sense.
When the pretense fails, the Whisperkin does not retreat. Confrontation or exposure triggers an immediate, uncontrollable collapse into feral violence. The shift is instantaneous: from passive mimicry to total aggression with no intermediate state. The silence before the violence, the fraction of a second where the broken social mask falls away and what was underneath is fully visible, is described by survivors as the worst part of the encounter.
The tragedy of the Whisperkin is different from the Omni's moments of clarity or the Thrill Kill's hidden sadism. It is the tragedy of something that desperately wants to come home and no longer knows how.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Gaunt and pale, but notably less deformed than other Infected Raiders. The body is wiry rather than bulky, built for stealth and quick movement. The relative lack of obvious mutation is what allows Whisperkin to pass in settlements, at least from a distance or in poor light. Up close, the wrongness is harder to miss: the pallor is too uniform, the movements too watchful, the eyes too alert for someone who should be relaxed.
Enhanced sensory perception gives the Whisperkin a bearing that reads as attentive rather than predatory, at least initially. The head turns to track sound and movement with a precision that goes beyond normal awareness. The body is always oriented toward the nearest social interaction, the nearest voice, the nearest source of the speech fragments it collects and repeats.
The build is optimized for what the Whisperkin actually does when the social mask fails: quick, explosive violence followed by either a kill or an escape. Stealth capability and enhanced agility are reflected in the lean musculature and quiet movement patterns. A Whisperkin walking through a settlement barely makes a sound. The silence is another tell, for anyone paying attention.

Biological Traits

Whisperkin Raiders enter play at Rank 2; no Rank 1 stat blocks exist. This reflects their more advanced and specialized nature compared to other Infected Raiders. They are not the entry-level encounter. They are the threat that shows up after a settlement has already learned what other Infected types look like.
The skill set combines infiltration with sudden lethality. Stealth and Agile Movement provide concealment and repositioning. Awareness detects hidden targets and threats. Carver delivers enhanced melee damage. Abduct seizes and relocates isolated targets. Delusions inflicts perception-altering effects that compound the confusion of an encounter already defined by broken reality and fractured communication.
The Infected Raider shared skill set (Cannibalism with Triggered Memories, Tainted Kin, Wolf Among Sheep, Feign Mediocrity) provides the social camouflage backbone. Wolf Among Sheep and Feign Mediocrity are the mechanical expression of the Whisperkin's ability to exist within settlements without triggering alarm, at least until the mimicry breaks down.
Body and Armor values are substantial: 80 Body with 30 Armor at Rank 2 base, scaling to 100 Body with 40 Armor at Rank 3 base. The variant profiles trade Body for additional Armor, maintaining consistent durability. When the violence triggers, the Whisperkin is not fragile. It hits hard, absorbs punishment, and does not stop until the encounter resolves.
Like all Infected Raiders, Whisperkin can pass through the Mortis Amaranthine chaotically. Permanent elimination is not guaranteed.

Behaviour

The default state is mimicry. A Whisperkin moves through a settlement the way water follows a channel: going where the social current takes it, pausing where others pause, responding to greetings with echoed fragments, and generally occupying the space that a normal community member would occupy. The behavior is driven by a compulsion to rejoin Lineage society that operates below conscious intent. The Whisperkin is not choosing to infiltrate. It is being pulled, by whatever remnant of its former self still remembers what belonging felt like.
The speech is the defining feature. Limited broken phrases composed entirely of echoed words and sentences overheard from the surrounding population. Not true communication but a form of mimicry that occasionally, almost accidentally, produces contextually appropriate responses. The effect is deeply unsettling for anyone who interacts long enough to notice the pattern. The words are right. The person behind them is not there.
The violence trigger is confrontation or exposure. When a community member directly challenges the Whisperkin's identity, questions its responses too aggressively, or otherwise forces the social mask to acknowledge that it is a mask, the collapse is immediate. There is no gradual escalation, no warning behavior, no chance to de-escalate. The Whisperkin shifts from passive mimicry to feral aggression in a single instant, and the violence that follows is uncontrollable. The creature cannot retreat once triggered. It fights until it is dead or everything around it is.
