Another might have mottled skin that shifts between pale green and ashen grey. A third could carry bioluminescent patterns that glow faintly in darkness, or vestigial spines along the forearms, or an extra eye that sees nothing but never closes. The mutations are as varied as the wasteland itself, and none of them are especially useful. They are expressions of an Infection that has not stopped experimenting.
Remnants are evolutionary outliers within the Mutant Lineage, hosts where the ongoing negotiation between Infection and radiation produces unpredictable, diverse results rather than the specialized adaptations found in other Strains. This constant biological flux makes them precursors to more stable forms: the Tainted evolved from Remnants exposed to Bad Brain disease, and the Unstable were created through deliberate experimentation on Psionic Remnants. To be a Remnant is to be nature's rough draft, carrying the potential for transformation without having arrived at a final form.

Exploitation of their reward-seeking nature, manipulating a Remnant's biological drive for belonging to extract labor or loyalty without genuine reciprocity, is recognized as a form of abuse even when the Remnant in question does not immediately see it themselves.

Remnants regard themselves as the Infection's ongoing experiment, and they are not entirely wrong. The tension between Infection and radiation within their bodies remains in constant motion, producing the unpredictable diversity of mutations that defines them. Other Strains stabilized into specialized forms; the Remnants did not. Whether this represents an earlier stage of evolution or a different strategy entirely depends on who you ask.
